KeePass

Never a day goes by without some kind of password hack being reported in the news. It’s important that you don’t reuse your passwords for different accounts. Also, make each password a bit more difficult than PASSWORD or 12345. Something along the lines of D?oqu?l8bhIY#|I+^\|&S~5Te is in order. But how do you remember that? You use a password manager.

I use a combination of LastPass with KeePass. You can export your LastPass passwords to KeePass. Once you’ve made the transfer you have a copy of your passwords in case anything ever happens to LastPass.

Eraser

If you are selling your computer, or are security conscious, then Eraser should be on your USB stick. The reason you need a secure erase method is that Windows files can be recovered even after you clear the Windows garbage can. The Windows trash can merely removes the file and gives you back disk space—but the file is still there. Anyone with the right software (readily and easily available online) could bring the file back. Eraser puts a stop to that.

Simply drag the files you want nuked into the Eraser window and let it do its work. By the time it is finished, those files will have been consigned to oblivion, and you can rest easy that your secrets are safe with you, and you only.

PWGen

PWGen is a password generator which will create for you large amounts of cryptographically-secure passwords or passphrases consisting of randomly drawn words from a dictionary. PWGen provides lots of options to customize passwords to the users’ various needs.

ClamWin

ClamWin is an antivirus program, which gives you features such as detecting viruses (obviously), as well as regular updates to the virus engine. You have to remember though that due to its portable nature, this is not a real-time scanner. This means that it will only detect a virus if you manually give it a file to check. Plus scheduled scans and updates are also not possible so you have to manually update it yourself.

CyberShredder

CyberShredder is an Eraser alternative. Just drag-and-drop files onto the CyberShredder interface and kiss those files goodbye.

If you are the paranoid type (and you should, because they really are out to get you), then Cybershredder is essential for making sure those deleted files stay deleted.

Downloading

1. Decide What You Want — The first step is to decide what you want to get. Do you want a copy of Firefox Portable to run by itself? Or do you want to download the full PortableApps Suite so you have a whole platform for portable apps? For most folks, getting the whole suite is recommended.
2. Browse to the App Page — Now that you’ve decided what you’d like to get, browse to the app’s page with its logo and the big download button. If you scroll down to the download details section of that page, it’ll tell you how much space it will take up on your device.
3. Click the Download Button — Click the big red download button
4. Select a Mirror — The next page lets you select a mirror. This is just a technical way of saying, select a download server that’s close to you geographically so your download will be faster. You’ll see servers all over the world. Pick one nearby and then click the Download link in the right-hand column of the table for the server you’ve chosen.
5. Save it Locally — Your browser will usually ask you where you’d like to save the file at this point. We recommend saving it right to your computer’s desktop so it’s easy to find.
6. Wait for it to finish — The download will begin. After it finishes, you can move on to installing

Adding Other Apps to the PortableApps.com Menu

The PortableApps.com Menu will also work with other standalone and portable apps. You just need to place them in a directory «next to» the PortableApps.com directory. So, in a standard layout, you’d create a directory within the X:\PortableApps directory and place it within there. For example, if you have a portable program MyApp.exe, you could create a folder called X:\PortableApps\MyApp\ and place MyApp.exe and all its files within there. Then, just click Apps — Refresh App Icons within the PortableApps.com Menu and your new app will show up.

It should be noted that, unlike apps in PortableApps.com Format, other apps labeled as ‘portable’ may not meet the definition of a portable app according to PortableApps.com. They could leave things behind on the local PC or some functionality may break as you move PCs. You will need to check with the provider to ensure it is fully portable. Additionally, apps not in PortableApps.com Format will not have their data backed up when you select to only backup app data using the platform’s backup feature. It will be backed up during a full backup, though.

Disabling a Portable App’s Splash Screen

Many apps packaged in PortableApps.com Format include splash screens so the user sees quick feedback an app is starting on slower flash media and doesn’t accidentally try to start it again. The splash screens also serve to let users know that they’re using a repackaged version of an app and to visit us first for portable support issues. If you’d prefer not to see the splash screen, disabling it is a snap.

PortableApps.com Platform — Click Options and select the Advanced tab. There, you’ll see a checkbox to disable splash screens across all our apps. Note that this will only affect splash screens shown by the PortableApps.com Launcher and not splash screens displayed by the apps themselves (GIMP, LibreOffice, etc).

Standalone — Within the AppNamePortable\Other\Source directory (where AppName is the name of the app you’re working with), you’ll find an AppNamePortable.ini file that includes some example options. Copy this file to the AppNamePortable directory and rename it, if necessary, to the name of the app (FirefoxPortable.ini or similar). Open the file within your preferred text editor, something like Notepad++ Portable. Within, you’ll find an entry DisableSplashScreen=false which just needs to be set to true. Save the file and the app will launch without the splash screen. This setting will be remembered as you upgrade the app, too.

Some apps include their own splash screen within the apps themselves (GIMP, LibreOffice, Scribus, etc). For these splash screens, there is sometimes an option within the Options of the app to disable it, a specific text file to modify, or a command line option to pass (which the PA.c Launcher can usually pass via the AdditionalParameters= setting in the INI file mentioned in the «Standalone» section above. You’ll need to check the app’s documentation from the publisher to be sure.

TeamViewer Portable 15.23.9 (pc control, screen sharing) Released

A new version of TeamViewer Portable has been released. TeamViewer is a remote PC support/control and screen-sharing tool. You can remote control a partner’s desktop to give online assistance, or you can show your screen to a customer without worrying about firewalls, IP addresses and NAT. It’s packaged as a portable app so you can work on the go and it’s in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. It’s released as freeware for personal use (business/office use requires a license).

System Tools

WinDirStat

WinDirStat allows users to generate a visual representation of what’s stored on their storage drive. The resulting visual depiction represents each file type using different colors (orange for text files, for example) and sizes (larger blocks mean larger amounts of data).

WinDirStat is the best tool for those who want to slim down a hard drive. Just avoid deleting any programs or files in your Windows directory.

CDBurnerXP

This is probably the best and easiest disc burning software app that I have ever used. Simply choose which one you want, then you will see your hard drive on the left and the disc space on the right. Then it’s just a case of dragging and dropping the files from your hard drive to the disc space. Then watch it start burning.

CCleaner

We were big fans of CCleaner here at MUO, up until their client became bogged down with ads. However, you might still want to give the portable version a try.

It definitely pays for you to give your computer a thorough cleaning now and then. Clear out all the crap files that are blocking up your system, and more. This is one thing you should schedule on a regular basis. The downside is that the portable version takes ages to start.

Geek Uninstaller

When you uninstall something from your computer, it isn’t really completely uninstalled. Windows leaves behind junk files and empty folders, which over time can clog up the pipes. Geek Uninstaller uninstalls programs properly and makes sure that all the junk goes with it.

Recuva

The portable version of Recuva lets users undelete any file that they’ve recently sent to the garbage. We call this a file recovery tool because it recovers deleted files. There are many kinds of recovery files out there, but the difference is Recuva offers a degree of flexibility that eclipses many paid undeleters.

If you ever accidentally delete something, Recuva should be the first app to check out.

FileBot

Do you have TV show files on your computer with messed up file names? Then FileBot will access various television-related websites such as IMDB and TV.com to get the full episode list for the relevant TV series and your titles will be automatically fixed for you. Pure genius.

Miscellaneous

Etcher

I’ve tried many different image-burning portable app, like Rufus and UNetbootin. The most user-friendly and well-designed application for burning images is Etcher. Etcher automatically performs validation checks on completed image burns. And on top of that, it’s one of the most user-friendly portable apps around.

If you ever need to create a live Linux USB drive, look no further than Etcher.

LicenseCrawler

At some point, you are going to need to wipe your computer. Whatever the reason, you are going to need the license keys for all of your paid software, and I am willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that you don’t already have them written down. Am I right?

ToddlerTrap

This app has two purposes. What it does is that it disables the keys on your keyboard, for when you are away from the computer. So first, this can be used to stop your children from deleting and ruining that 100-page report to your boss. But second, and this is what I use it for, it can be used to clean the keyboard without watching the keys go crazy on your monitor.

LinuxLive USB Creator

Linux is a great alternative system if you are tired of the usual Windows or Mac scene. And we have covered Linux extensively over the years. LinuxLive USB Creator is an app which easily and effortlessly installs any version of Linux onto your USB stick. It falls under the «even your grandma could do it» category.

UNetbootin

UNetbootin can take an ISO image and burn it into a USB stick. That’s useful for when you need an installable medium for holding a Linux distribution. In my opinion, UNetbootin works even better than LinuxLive USB Creator because of its simplicity and ease of use.

An app says it ‘did not close properly’ when started

You may see an error stating that «AppName Portable did not close properly last time it was run and will now clean up. Please then start AppName Portable again manually.» When you see this, it means that the portable app’s launcher did not close and clean up properly the last time the app was used. This can be caused by a system crash, an unsafe drive eject, or shutting Windows down without first closing an app. When this occurs, the portable launcher may not have been able to remove app data from the local disk, restore local app data back to the proper location, move portable app data to the proper directory for backups and upgrades, or similar.

The easiest way to prevent this, is to use the PortableApps.com Platform’s «Close Apps on Platform Exit» feature. This will automatically close your portable apps safely without causing data loss or leaving any data behind on the local machine. It includes specialized logic to close apps that don’t properly respond to Windows shutdown app close messages as well. Apps in PortableApps.com Format as well as those that are natively portable will be detected and asked to close. The platform will even warn you about any running apps that did not respond to the request to close (LibreOffice having a document open with unsaved changes, for instance).

Ideally, we would like the error message to be dismissable and not require another launch of the AppNamePortable.exe launcher. Unfortunately, this is not possible at present due to the way the PortableApps.com Launcher is written. Adding this feature will take a major rewrite of sections of the PortableApps.com Launcher and our volunteer developers do not have time at present. We hope to add this in a future release.

Additionally, we would like to adjust the PortableApps.com Launcher to detect and respond to Windows shutdown messages directly. This will likely require a rewrite of the launcher in a different programming language, so it will take quite a bit of time and effort to achieve.

Перетащите в папку «PortableApps» другую переносную программу, не связанную с PortableApps.com.  Далее в оболочке выделите любую программу, а в контекстном меню нажмите на пункт «Обновить».

После обновления, в списке программ появится новая программа, которая будет расположена в папке «Прочее». Переместите программу в подходящую категорию, в соответствии с выполняемыми функциями.

Некоторые портабельные программы добавляют два значка в оболочку. Оставьте в платформе цветной значок (будет понятно), а по другому значку кликните правой кнопкой мыши, в контекстном меню выберите команду «Скрыть».

В программах могут быть два одинаковых значка для работы отдельно в 32 битных или 64 битных версиях операционной системы Windows. Что делать в этом случае, я покажу на примере программы CCleaner Portable.

Подведите курсор мыши к одному из двух одинаковых значков для того, чтобы увидеть разрядность приложения. Вы увидите, что данный значок расположен по пути к файлу «CCleaner64.exe». Этот значок можно переименовать из контекстного меню. Дайте значку новое имя, например, «CCleaner x64». После этого, будет понятно, что с данного значка можно запускать программу в 64 битной версии операционной системы Windows.

Среди портативных программ очень востребованы инструменты системного администратора – эмуляторы операционной системы, диагностические средства и автономные антивирусы. С их помощью опытный пользователь может приводить в порядок компьютеры друзей, знакомых или клиентов. Существуют готовые «аптечки скорой помощи» с наборами портативных программ для помощи «больному» компьютеру. Пользоваться такими программами удобно, мобильно, но существует риск с безопасностью и теоретически с законностью использования программ, подлежащих активации.

Важно! Для повышения вирусоустойчивости рекомендуется хранить дистрибутивы используемых портативных программ в заархивированном виде в формате 7zip. Дело в том, что нацеленных на этот формат вирусов очень мало

Распаковывая свободный от вирусов архив для каждого запуска портативной программы, пользователь значительно повышает её вирусоустойчивость.
